Practical facts for a first visit. Where a rule or a date can change, we say when we checked and link the source.
Money
The currency is the tögrög (₮, MNT). Most places in the city take Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay, and Apple Pay works on the same card machines. Depending on your bank, a foreign card is occasionally declined, so carry some cash as a backup.
Carry cash for taxis, markets and the countryside.
At the airport you exit customs on the first floor; ATMs and currency exchanges are on the second floor. Locals often pay by QR code.
SIM and internet
Unitel and Mobicom sell tourist SIM cards on the airport’s second floor. Bring your passport to register one.
eSIMs work too.
Airport
Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN) is about 50 km south of the city.
With no traffic, the drive to Sükhbaatar Square takes about 1 hour 30 minutes; in heavy traffic it can take 3 hours or more.
Only the airport’s official taxis can pick up passengers there. Other taxis are not allowed.
Getting around
Agree the fare before a street taxi sets off.
The UBCab app needs a local phone number.
Rush-hour traffic is heavy, so allow extra time.
When to go and weather
June to September is the main season, with July days at about 25 °C.
In January, days are about −15 °C and nights about −25 °C.
Naadam and holidays
Naadam, the summer festival of wrestling, horse racing and archery, is around 11–15 July. The 2027 dates are not announced yet.
Tsagaan Sar, the Lunar New Year, falls in February or early March. The 2027 date is to be confirmed.

Plugs
220–230 V, 50 Hz. Sockets are type C and type F (two-pin European plugs). Bring an adapter if yours is different.
